This is the Revell 1:570 scale Battleship Bismarck. I first built the Bismarck (maybe even this version) as a kid back in the 60s. So ya, this is an old kit, but definitely worth building and can be found cheaply at around $14.00. You can build her up as is, in a day or two, to create a reasonably accurate replica. There’s plenty of room for improvement though (and Revell has improved things tremendously with their new 1:350 scale Bismarck) I’m no Bismarck expert but could spot a few issues easily. ‘A’ turret, (Anton) had no range finders, this is easily fixed: snip, snip. The top of the forward superstructure slopped downward towards the bow, but on this model it’s level. This was also easily fixed with a little shaving. There are other minor flaws, like the forward bridge works looking rather squashed and the molded on rails, that are a detraction but for $14.00 I’m not complaining. All her parts fit together well, absolutely no trouble there. I made Bismarck right after Hood (Of course) so she’s my third build after my model-building reboot. She still needs her rigging applied, yet another unfinished project…
Update 7/15/2012
I finally added some rigging and a few other finishing touches. The new pictures are at top, a few of her original pictures are below.
I just ordered a Revelle Bismark 1:350 kit. Do you have a source for brass propeller upgrades? Thanks much.
Joey
Sorry I don’t. Just did a quick check of eBay, then google in general and struck out too.
Oddly hard to find – Shapeways has 3D printed ones but they are likely not much better than the kit’s and were not printed in brass.
That is a great model, I have it in my stash too. Good luck!
