You may have noticed I have two of these models…
This kit was the first sailing ship model I ever built. My first attempt at it (the one with dark blue paint on its upper works) initially came out kind-of crappy… At least compared to my second and third sailing ship builds. My second was the Golden Hind, I loved how that one came out so much I bought another Sovereign of the Seas and tried to do it up like I had done the Golden Hind. The result is the SotS with the red, white and blue paint job, which I liked much better than the original look of the first SotS.
Ok, long story short a couple years latter I realized I could always re-rig and repaint the first SotS. So I did and that is how I ended up with the two copies of this kit you see here. I now like the blue version better, as I think the colors are more accurate. Too bad it’s missing the detail at the top of the stern wall.
PS: I no longer have the Golden Hind (I gave it to my God Father). Wish I had taken some pictures – but that was way before digital cameras…
Update 1/22/25:
Some info on the kit:
Scale is 1/250 (about 15 inches long when completed)
Molded in brown and white plastic
Ratlines are molded in the same stiff brown plastic as the hull (easy to work with but to me a design weak point as is the stand)
No decals or flag sheets (that I can remember)
I’ve always liked the detail in the hull engravings
